Malappuram: Football world champions Argentina have conveyed their interest to come down to Kerala to play a friendly match, claimed state Sports Minister V Abdurahiman on Tuesday.

According to the minister, he has received an email from the Argentine Football Association (AFA), the governing body of football in the South American nation, confirming its keenness to play in Kerala. "Finer details of the agreement will emerge only after a meeting between AFA officials and the state government. We need to outline all the details of the proposal, including the financial aspect before working out a viable strategy," he said and expressed confidence that Kerala would host top foreign sides in the near future.

Soon after Argentina were crowned world champions in Qatar in 2022, the Kerala government contacted the football authorities in that country, inviting their national team led by Lionel Messi to Kerala. The latest email from the AFA was in response to the invitation extended by the state government, it was learnt.

According to sources, Argentina are likely to travel to Kerala in the second half of the year.
