Australia defeated India by 184 runs in the fourth Test to take a 2-1 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Melbourne on Monday.

India had to chase 339 to win, but more realistically, the visitors had to hold on for the remainder of the final day to keep the series level. But they couldn't, and barring an 88-run stand for the fourth wicket between Yashasvi Jaiswal (84) and Rishabh Pant (30), India never seemed capable of staying alive throughout the day.

Except for Jaiswal and Pant, no other Indian scored in double digits, and while captain Rohit Sharma continued his dismal form, his score of nine was, ironically, the next-best score.

Australian captain Pat Cummins and Scott Boland bagged three wickets each, while Nathan Lyon claimed two as India's second innings folded for 155.

Earlier, Australia were bowled out for 234. India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah had bowled Nathan Lyon for 41 to wrap up Australia's second innings and finish with 5/57 and a total of nine wickets for the match. Bumrah now has five wickets or better in 13 innings in Tests and has 30 wickets for the five-Test series at an average of 12.83.
