Perumbavoor: A 30-year-old man from Assam was killed in an alleged mob-lynching incident in Perumbavoor, Ernakulam, in the early hours of Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Nur Hussain, a native of Nagaon.

Perumbavoor police have booked six men, all natives of Assam, in connection with the case. The accused are Jakir Hussain, Alavudheen Hussain, Minarul, Habeesudheen, Muzammil Houque and Hachen Ali. They have been charged under Sections 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 189(2), 189(3), and 189(4) (unlawful assembly), 190 (common liability), and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to police, the incident happened around 6 am at the workers’ quarters of AM Veneers, a plywood company at Mudickal in Marampilly, where the accused were staying. Police said Nur Hussain, along with three others, allegedly entered the quarters and stole seven mobile phones and ₹73,000 in cash. The accused, who noticed the theft, managed to catch Nur while his accomplices escaped with the stolen items.

As per the FIR, the accused restrained him in a room adjacent to the kitchen and assaulted him using sticks and other objects, inflicting grievous injuries that led to his death. Police said the assault was carried out with a common intention. “The accused later took him to a hospital and informed the police while he was being transported,” an officer with the Perumbavoor police said.

Police have begun recording statements from the accused and witnesses. Officials said further investigation is needed to establish the victim’s movements prior to the incident. Inquest proceedings are underway, and a post-mortem will be conducted at the General Hospital in Muvattupuzha.

This is the fourth such case in Kerala in the past decade involving the death of a migrant worker in a mob attack, according to Assembly records. In December 2025, Ramnarayan Bhagel (31), a native of Chhattisgarh, was allegedly beaten to death in Palakkad on suspicion of theft. In April 2024, Asok Das (24) from Arunachal Pradesh was fatally assaulted in Muvattupuzha.
