The two-year-old girl Devendu, whose body was retrieved from a well near the house at Kottukalkonam ward in Balaramapuram, died by drowning, the autopsy has revealed. A police official associated with the probe said that there were no signs of injury, strangulation or abuse on her body. "The child drowned in the well. There were no bodily injuries as per details gathered from postmortem," the official said.
The police have learnt that the child was hurled into the well alive. The interrogation of family members has so far yielded nothing concrete; however, cops said that the child's maternal uncle, Harikumar, could be the main suspect.
"We need to get a few details verified before we can confirm the motive. The probe is currently centred around Harikumar, but we are not ruling out involvement of other people in the family," the official said. Harikumar became silent during questioning many times, and his mental stability also needs to be assessed, police said.
Sreejith (father of Devendu), Sreethu (mother), Ragini (mother of Sreethu) and Harikumar ( brother of Sreethu) are being questioned as the police suspect that the child was murdered. The family members have given contradictory statements, which led to suspicion surrounding the death of the girl.
Devendu was first reported missing in the morning. Police arrived at the house, and the fire force was summoned later. The body was retrieved from the well in the morning. The police also said that there was no ground to establish suspicion that the family members planned to commit suicide. The cops will resume questioning soon.
