Kozhikode: A fox attacked five people, including three women, here over two days. The incident occurred in Changaramvelly, Meppayur grama panchayat, Melippurathu, and Thiruvangayoor in Arikkulam grama panchayat.
Four victims sought treatment at Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital, while one received care at Koyilandy Taluk Hospital. Three suffered bite wounds on their faces.
The first attack occurred on Tuesday evening when a fox bit Sarojini at her residence in Changaramvelly. She tried to drive the animal away after it attempted to attack children playing in the front yard. The fox bit her on the face, hands, and legs. Sarojini received treatment at the medical college hospital and was discharged on Wednesday morning.
The next incident occurred on Wednesday at 6 am near the Ayanikkad branch canal in Melippurathu, where a fox attacked Prakashan while he was on his way to the milk society with a filled milk pot.
He suffered injuries to his lip and neck. Hearing his screams, Prameela rushed to help, but the fox attacked her as well, biting her on the thigh. Both were admitted to the Medical College Hospital.
Later that morning, the fox bit Geeta in front of the Thiruvangayoor temple, causing severe injuries to her face. When Sooraj intervened to rescue her, the fox bit his hand. Geeta was taken to the medical college hospital, while Sooraj received treatment at Koyilandy Taluk Hospital.
"Most victims sustained bite injuries on their faces," said Chandran Malayachankandy, a local resident of Arikkulam. He added that abandoned land overgrown with bushes and rocks had led to an increase in fox and wild boar sightings in the area.
Arikkulam grama panchayat president A M Sugathan stated that officials had not yet confirmed whether a single fox or multiple animals were responsible for the attacks. "We have urged residents to remain vigilant," he added.
Frightened by the repeated attacks, residents killed a fox on Wednesday morning. However, officials have yet to confirm whether it was the same animal responsible for all the incidents.
