Thiruvananthapuram: The new date for exhuming the controversial burial site of Neyyattinkara Gopan Swami will be decided on Tuesday, with the sub-collector expected to make a decision based on a fresh police report.

Meanwhile, Gopan Swami’s son, Sanandhan, has asserted that the family will not allow the exhumation, arguing that the decision would hurt religious sentiments. He also stated that the police have not issued a formal notice and that a statement was already recorded. Sanandhan admitted to putting up posters of his father at the burial site and mentioned that the Hindu Aikya Vedi plans to take legal action.

Exhumation efforts were halted on Monday due to protests by the family and escalating tensions in the area. Despite discussions involving the assistant collector and the police, the family refused to cooperate. A copy of the collector’s order regarding the exhumation was handed over to the family, who are expected to approach the court on Tuesday. Further actions will depend on the court’s directives.

Sanandhan claims that 78-year-old Neyyattinkara Gopan Swami passed away on Saturday morning. He and his brother, Rajasenan, performed the last rites near their home and constructed a burial site there. However, a neighbour filed a complaint stating that Swami was missing, prompting the police to register a case and seek the collector’s permission to exhume the body.

Amid growing suspicions, the police sealed the burial site on Saturday evening. With no complaints from the family, the police acted on the neighbour's report of Swami’s disappearance and registered a case.
