Malappuram: The family of an 18-year-old girl, Fathima Fida, who died by suicide at her home in Mampad, Malappuram, has called for a Crime Branch investigation, alleging that harassment by her school teachers drove her to the extreme step.
Fida, a Plus Two student at a nearby private school, was found hanging in her bedroom on December 9. According to her family, she was deeply distressed after being accused of cheating during the Christmas examination. Following the incident, the school authorities summoned her father, Shajahan, who brought her home. The family stated that Fida remained visibly upset after the confrontation.
The tragedy occurred when Shajahan returned from the mosque after noon prayers and found her room locked. Despite repeated attempts to get a response, there was silence. When the door was forced open, Fida was discovered hanging from the ceiling fan.
"The humiliation my daughter faced from her teachers directly led to her death. Four teachers publicly shamed her in front of her classmates after the incident. We demand their arrest on charges of abetment to suicide," said Shajahan.
He also criticised the school management for failing to take action against the teachers and accused the police of showing little urgency in the case. Fida’s mother, P Naseeha, alleged that the authorities had not recorded the statements of her daughter's classmates, who could provide critical information about the events leading up to her death.
An action council has been formed with plans to march to the school in protest against the perceived inaction of the authorities. The family has filed complaints with key officials, including the Chief Minister, the Education Minister, the Director General of Police (DGP), the Malappuram District Collector, and the District Police Chief. Shajahan also expressed his intention to meet the Chief Minister personally to push for immediate action.
