New Delhi/Pathanamthitta: The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Saturday took suo motu cognizance of a serial sexual abuse case involving a teenage girl in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district, where over 60 suspects have been identified. The Commission termed the crime “heinous” and directed the Kerala Police to arrest all accused without delay. It also sought a detailed action report within three days.
“The NCW, under the directions of Chairperson Smt Vijaya Rahatkar, has taken serious note of reports of a teenage girl alleging sexual abuse by 64 individuals over four years,” the Commission stated on X. "While 5 accused have been arrested, the Commission strongly condemns this heinous crime and has directed authorities to ensure the immediate arrest of all accused," the panel added. It also urged authorities to provide the survivor with comprehensive medical and psychological support.
The case came to light after the girl, now 18, disclosed her ordeal to a community counsellor associated with Kudumbashree’s ‘Snehitha’ initiative. Recognising the gravity of the situation, the counsellor informed the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Pathanamthitta, which led to a coordinated government response. The survivor revealed years of repeated sexual abuse and gang rape, allegedly involving neighbours, classmates, and even strangers.
