Malappuram: MLA P V Anvar was remanded to judicial custody following his arrest on Sunday night in connection with the vandalism of the Nilambur Forest Office. He was presented before the magistrate and transferred to Tavanur Sub Jail alongside the Democratic Movement of Kerala (DMK) workers Sudheer Punnappala, Mustafa Pattambi, Shaukkath Panamaram, and Kunjimuhammad. The arrest occurred around 9 pm at his residence in Othai. After being detained, Anvar underwent a medical examination.
Speaking to the media, Anvar accused the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government of orchestrating his arrest under political pressure. He alleged that political secretary P Sasi and ADGP Ajith Kumar were involved and accused the Chief Minister of succumbing to RSS influence.
Anvar claimed he was unprepared for the arrest but expressed willingness to remain in jail for two months if it benefitted residents of the high ranges. However, he stated that he would approach the court for bail on Monday.
''They created an atmosphere of terror as if arresting Veerappan or Dawood Ibrahim. This is an intimidation tactic against those who speak out against Pinarayi Vijayan. I would have gone and surrendered if they had issued a notice. But look at the massive police deployment! Why such terror in the middle of the night? What heinous crime have I committed?'' said Anvar.
The case pertains to the vandalism of the Nilambur Forest Office following the death of a youth in a wild elephant attack. Anvar, along with his supporters, allegedly stormed the office and caused significant damage.
He faces charges, including the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act, a non-bailable offence. Senior Congress leaders K Sudhakaran and Ramesh Chennithala criticised the police for their handling of the arrest.
