The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) polled 6.95 lakh more votes in 2024 than it did in 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Kerala, as per the latest poll data released by the Election Commission. The CPM and the Congress collectively lost 6.98 lakh votes between the two general elections (2019 and 2024) in the state.

While the CPM lost 1.05 lakh votes between 2019 and 2024, the Congress recorded a loss of 5.92 lakh votes. In a decade, BJP gained an additional 14.74 lakh votes in Kerala in the Parliament elections, marking a phenomenal 79% increase. The figure is higher than what the Congress gained in 10 years in Kerala -- 14.13 lakh.

Although the final results painted a rosy picture for the Congress in 2019 and 2024 in Kerala, it has lost considerably in total number of votes polled and the total vote share. In five years, Congress's vote share in general elections in Kerala dropped by 2 percentage points. In the meantime, BJP's vote share increased by 3.82 percentage points. CPM's increase in the same period was nominal -- 0.08 percentage points. Even with a loss in total votes polled and total vote share, Congress still managed 15 seats in 2019 and 14 seats in 2024.

In 2024, the BJP led in 11 assembly segments whereas it had managed to bag lead in one assembly segment in 2019. It also came second in nine assembly segments in 2024. The CPM had recorded a vote loss of 2-4 percentage points in various constituencies in 2024. The party could record an increase in vote share only in three constituencies -- Alathur, Pathanamthitta and Chalakudy.

The Congress had also lost votes in many constituencies in 2024. In sitting seat Alathur, Congress lost 1.5 lakh votes while in Thrissur where Suresh Gopi gave a major shock to opponents,Congress votes dropped by nearly 87,000. The 2024 LS election in Kerala had recorded a drop in voter turnout when compared to 2019.

CPM's main ally, CPI, marginally improved its vote share from 6.08% to 6.19%. Another ally Kerala Congress (M) saw the vote share drop from 2.07% to 1.4%.
