Kannur: Kodi Suni, a convict in the murder of RMP leader TP Chandrasekharan, was granted parole for 30 days. The decision was made following an application submitted by his mother to the Human Rights Commission (HRC). Acting on the Commission's recommendation, the Jail DGP approved the parole.
Suni was released from Tavanur jail on December 28, marking his first release in five years. The parole was granted despite the police's objection citing Suni’s involvement in criminal activities during earlier parole periods and recommended against granting him further leave.
In the letter to the State Human Rights Commission, Suni's mother said that he was not given parole for six years, and in 12 years, he got parole only for 60 days. She cited her health conditions in the request and said that she had respiratory ailments, and her health condition was bad.
In the order, the HRC noted that the government reserves the discretion to allow parole for prisoners based on the jail authorities' report. The HRC cannot issue a directive or recommendation to give parole to a prisoner, the HRC judicial member K Baijunath noted. However, the HRC recommended to the Director of prisons and correctional services that while considering the request for parole, whether the request deserves humanitarian consideration shall be taken into account.
TP’s wife and Vadakara MLA KK Rema called the move 'unusual'. While acknowledging Suni’s mother's right to approach the Human Rights Commission, she questioned the rationale behind the 30-day parole.
