New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala emerged top in the country in overseas voter registration and turnout during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with 89,839 expatriates registered as voters, the Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Friday. Among them, 83,765 were men, 6,065 women, and 9 identified as transgender.
The state also recorded the highest overseas voter turnout, with 2,670 expatriates travelling home to cast their votes. “This accomplishment underscores the commitment of Non-Resident Keralites (NRKs) and the success of targeted initiatives by various stakeholders,” the ECI noted in an official release.
According to the ECI, the increased participation was largely driven by Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) campaigns designed specifically for NRIs. These efforts included widespread awareness programmes, educational initiatives, and voter registration links integrated into NORKA’s official website. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) also played a vital role by engaging with the families of expatriates during their field visits, further boosting voter awareness and turnout, ECI added.
