Kanjirappally: The Kottayam Additional Sessions Court on Saturday sentenced the accused in the Kanjirappally twin murder case to double life imprisonment. The accused, George Kurian (52), was sentenced to life imprisonment for each murder, resulting in two consecutive life sentences.
Additionally, the court imposed a fine of Rs 20 lakh on the accused, which will be given to the victim's wife and her children as compensation.
The accused deliberately committed the murders and showed no remorse for his actions, making it unsafe for him to live among the public, the prosecution argued.
George Kurian faces charges under various sections, including IPC Section 449 (house trespass with the intent to commit murder), Section 506(2) (criminal intimidation), for which he has to serve jail time for two years and three months under Section 30 of the Indian Arms Act for violating the conditions of his gun licence totalling 8 years of imprisonment to be served consecutively before the double life sentences begin, the public prosecutor told media.
The incident occurred on March 7, 2021. According to the prosecution, the accused shot and killed his younger brother, Renju Kurian (50), and his mother’s brother, Mathai Scaria (78), using his licensed revolver.
