Kozhikode: The intensified three-day joint inspection by the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) and the Police has detected around 750 traffic violations in the Kozhikode district.
The vehicle checks, which focused on accident-prone areas on roads called black spots, also saw MVD issue fines worth Rs 20 lakh.
The MVD said the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) also suspended drivers' licences who committed serious offences.
The MVD and the Police decided to intensify the inspections following the transport commissioner's instruction, who was alarmed by the growing number of motor accidents.
The officials conducted 24x7 vehicle inspections at the accident-prone areas.
Drivers were booked for violations such as driving without a licence, carrying weight over the prescribed limit, reckless driving, riding without a helmet, driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding, using a mobile phone while driving, driving two-wheelers with two pillion riders, and driving buses without keeping the prescribed time.
MVD officials also took action against owners who were driving vehicles registered in other states without proper documents or paying the tax. Vehicles were found with dismantled speed governors and some without a functioning GPS.
The Regional Transport Officer PA Nazeer and Enforcement Wing RTO Santhosh Kumar led the MVD team.
