Kumily: Raising the Mullaperiyar dam's water level to 152 feet is a dream for Tamil Nadu and the DMK government will make it a reality, said the State's Rural Development and Local Administration Minister I Periyasamy. The minister's remarks came after assessing rain-related damages in Theni district.

Periyasamy added that, as per the Supreme Court's verdict, Tamil Nadu has the right to carry out maintenance works on the Mullaperiyar dam. He also mentioned that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had decided to discuss the matter with Kerala's Chief Minister during a visit to Vaikom.

Last week, Kerala granted Tamil Nadu permission to carry out maintenance works on the Mullaperiyar dam. The order was issued by the Additional Chief Secretary of Kerala's Water Resources Department, with specific conditions for seven works. Tamil Nadu will carry out temporary maintenance, including cement painting on the dam and spillway, to alleviate public concerns until a new Mullaperiyar dam is constructed, the order clarified.

The works must be carried out only in the presence of the Executive Engineer of the Idukki MI Division or an officer assigned by him. Tamil Nadu must provide advance notice regarding the dates and times for transporting construction materials. Vehicles will only be permitted between 6 am and 6 pm, in compliance with forest regulations.
