Kozhikode: CPM Kozhikode district secretary P Mohanan on Sunday withdrew his earlier criticism of the fitness group MEC 7 (Multi Exercise Combination), which has been rapidly gaining popularity across north Kerala. Describing it as an exercise group aimed at combating lifestyle diseases, Mohanan stated there was no reason to oppose the collective. Previously, the CPM leader had criticised MEC 7, claiming that the SDPI and Jamaat-e-Islami were behind the group. "I was merely urging people to be cautious about communal forces like Jamaat-e-Islami, SDPI, and Sangh Parivar infiltrating such public forums and attempting to push their agendas," Mohanan clarified.

The group became embroiled in controversy after CPM and Sunni leaders accused MEC 7 of being run by Jamaat-e-Islami and the banned Popular Front of India. Samastha leaders had warned Sunni followers against joining MEC 7, asserting that Jamaat-e-Islami was behind the initiative. After the Hindu Aikya Vedi made similar accusations, the special branch of the police launched an investigation into the group’s activities.

In response, MEC 7 has maintained that it is solely a healthcare initiative supported by all political parties, including the CPM. The group has also called for the police to investigate and take action if any separatist elements are found within MEC 7.

MP VK Sreekandan expressed his support for MEC 7, stating that the group should be established nationwide to promote fitness, and he did not see any connection to caste, religion, or politics. He made these remarks after inaugurating the Pattambi leg of MEC 7. "This is a simple exercise routine. MEC 7 will help prevent drug use. It can be implemented quickly and practised by everyone," Sreekandan said.
