The Vanchiyoor police have registered a case against 500 identifiable individuals, including local Left leaders, for blocking the road near the Vanchiyoor court complex and police station during a recent CPM meeting. Party's Vanchiyoor area committee secretary P Babu has been named the prime accused in the case.
Station House Officer (SHO) Shanif H S confirmed that 35 individuals have been arrested so far and released on station bail. The accused faces charges under Sections 189(1)(d), 190, 191(2), 233(a), and 285 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Vanchiyoor Sub-Inspector (SI) Mahesh K S is leading the investigation.
According to the FIR, the incident occurred on December 5 after 6 pm when CPM activists held a meeting, blocking the Uppidamoodu-Vanchiyoor road and obstructing pedestrians and vehicles. Despite police orders to disband, the group refused to disperse. The FIR noted that immediate arrests were avoided to prevent further escalation, and a case was filed later the same day at 8:47 pm.
This action follows a Kerala High Court directive seeking a detailed report on the incident, which allegedly violated a 2010 judicial order prohibiting public meetings on roads or road margins. The court then demanded accountability from the police and questioned the measures taken against the violators.
The directive was issued during a contempt plea hearing filed by N Prakash, an Ernakulam resident, against CPM state secretary MV Govindan. The petitioner alleged that the party’s Palayam area conference on December 5 contravened the 2010 High Court order. The order had instructed authorities to dismantle any unauthorised stages or structures and maintain public access.
Prakash’s plea argued that the CPM’s actions disrupted public movement and sought legal proceedings against Govindan and others under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971.
