Thiruvananthapuram: Karthyayani Amma, 97, is perhaps the oldest student in Kerala. Having cleared 'Aksharalaksham' examination conducted by the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority (KSLMA), with a record score of 98 out of 100, the Alappuzha native aims to clear tenth standard equivalent examination when she turns 100. Karthyayani Amma was honoured by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during the certificate distribution ceremony for those who cleared 'Aksharalaksham' examination at the secretariat here on Thursday which was also the state formation day (Kerala Piravi).
In a brief conversation with the CM, Karthyayani Amma revealed her next academic plan – to learn computer. “I get curious when my grandchildren play on computers. I want to learn how to use them. I hope computer will be a part of tenth standard equivalent exam syllabus,” she told Pinarayi.
Impressed by her innocence and passion for learning, the chief minister asked Karthyayani Amma whether she loved literature. The smart granny answered his question by reciting a couplet from acclaimed poet Changampuzha Krishna Pillai's classic 'Ramanan.'
“You have to answer my questions before I give you the certificate,” Pinarayi told Karthyayani Amma.
“Why do you want to continue your education in this old age,” he asked.
“Because I can't resist attempting to read books that my great grandchildren study,” she replied.
“What are you going to do after gaining a degree in this old age,” the CM asked again.
“Clear more examinations!” was Karthyayani Amma's quick reply.
“I can't but give you this certificate. Take a bow,” a laughing CM said.
“Then what are you waiting for?” Karthyayani Amma shot back.
Malayala Manorama had published a photograph of Karthyayani Amma attending examination at Kanichanellur UP school, Muttom, on August 6. She was the oldest among 42,933 candidates who cleared the literacy examinations this year. Karthyayani Amma secured 38 out of 40 in writing, and cent per cent in reading and maths. Ramachandran Pillai, who was seated besides Karthyayani Amma for the literacy exam, secured 88 marks out of 100.
'Aksharalaksham', aimed at eradicating illiteracy among aged and deprived population of Kerala, attained 99.08 per cent success this year, as 42,933 out of 43,330 candidates cleared the test.
