7 transgender students join MG University for graduate courses

Pathanamthitta: The Mahatma Gandhi (MG) University has admitted seven transgender students to degree courses for the first time. The number of transgender students are expected to rise to 12 after the allotments through single-window system are completed.
Kerala state education department had reserved up to two additional seats for transgender applicants for all the courses in universities and affiliated arts and science colleges under it. In the first week of July, education minister professor C Ravindranath announced the decision while stating that the government looks forward to extending the transgender aspirants an easier access to higher education in order to ensure better social justice.
MG University vice-chancellor Dr Babu Sebastian confirmed that additional seats have been set apart as per the government order.

The university provides two seats for them in the B. Com course and five for science subjects. There is no age limit for graduate courses.
Majority of students admitted to the university this year are female. Maximum number of applicants were for B. Com Finance and Taxation and B. Com Computer Application.
