The Mumbai Police have arrested Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national who changed his name to Vijay Das, in connection with the stabbing of Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at his Mumbai home during a burglary attempt.
Four days after the incident, the police apprehended the accused from the Hiranandani Estate on Ghodbandar Road, neighbouring Thane district. The accused has been staying in and around Mumbai, working for a house cleaning agency for the past few months. He is residing in the country illegally, said a senior police official in a press conference on Sunday.
The accused has confessed to the crime, and further investigations are ongoing, police added. He was produced in the holiday court in Bandra at 1.30 pm to seek his police remand.
This comes after the Mumbai Police clarified on Friday that a man they had previously detained was not connected to the incident. He had been questioned after resembling the attacker and was brought to the Bandra police station carrying a backpack similar to one seen in the CCTV footage from the actor’s building.
The 54-year-old actor, who sustained six stab wounds, including one to his neck, is no longer in danger following emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital. The attack took place around 2.30 am in front of his younger son Jeh's room.
CCTV footage showed the alleged assailant, wearing a red scarf and carrying a backpack, quickly descending the stairs from the sixth floor of the Satguru Sharan building where Khan resides.
