Sonamarg (J&K): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while inaugurating the Sonamarg tunnel on Monday, reiterated his commitment to transforming Kashmir into a symbol of progress and prosperity. Calling it the "crown of India," he expressed his vision for making the region more glorious with the active support of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Prime Minister began his address by paying tribute to the civilian workers who lost their lives during the construction of the 6.4 km, Rs 2,700-crore Sonamarg tunnel. “Despite grave dangers, no worker chose to leave the site, even after a terrorist attack claimed seven lives at the Gagangir camp. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten,” he said.

PM Modi highlighted the significant strides being made in infrastructure and connectivity in the region. “From new railways and roads to tunnels and bridges, these projects are paving the way for a ‘Naya Kashmir.’ The Sonamarg tunnel, alongside the upcoming Zojila tunnel, will ensure all-season connectivity, enhancing access to Ladakh and beyond,” he said.

Referring to the restoration of peace in the region, the PM noted the resurgence of tourism and economic activity. “Over two crore tourists visited J&K in 2024, underscoring the region’s transformation from a conflict zone to a global tourist destination. Markets in Lal Chowk are bustling, cinemas are reopening, and events like international marathons and car racing in Srinagar showcase the region’s vibrant revival,” he added.

Modi also outlined the broader development agenda for the region, including new educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and housing projects. “From IITs to polytechnics, the youth of J&K will soon have access to quality education locally. Initiatives like free healthcare and affordable housing are ensuring a brighter future for every family,” he said.

Addressing the demand for statehood raised by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the PM assured that all promises would be fulfilled at the appropriate time. “Every decision requires the right moment, and I am committed to keeping my word,” he affirmed.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, emphasized the transformative impact of infrastructure development. “Good roads drive prosperity. The completion of the Zojila tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity to Ladakh while reducing travel time from Delhi to Srinagar to just 7-8 hours,” he stated.

Lt Governor Manoj Sinha lauded the Prime Minister’s vision, highlighting that 99 per cent of villages in J&K now have road connectivity. “Your leadership has shifted the narrative of J&K from terrorism to tourism, ensuring equitable progress through initiatives like reservations for underprivileged communities,” he said.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah praised the Prime Minister’s efforts in ensuring peace, fair elections, and better connectivity. He acknowledged the significance of the Sonamarg tunnel, which will allow residents of the once-isolated area to remain in their homes during winter.
