Every year January 24th is celebrated as the National Girl Child Day in India. This day is dedicated to promoting awareness about the rights and welfare of girl children in the country, The celebration of the day is intended to promote girls' education and help them pursue career goals. The mission also involves raising awareness about the importance of treating girls with dignity and respect, and focussing on better healthcare and nutrition.

To ensure empowerment various government, NGO and private agencies encourage girls to participate in decision-making processes and take control of their lives. Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child) is a government initiative to promote girls' education and prevent female foeticide. A slew of programmes have been envisaged towards creating opportunities for girls to grow and develop is a prerequisite for their better future. Launched in the year 2008, the National Girl Child Day is celebrated by promoting equality, justice, and opportunities for girls in India.

To mark the day awareness campaigns like organizing rallies, workshops, and seminars to promote girls' rights have been conducted. Providing scholarships and educational support to girl children are also part of the programme apart from conducting health camps and providing medical check-ups for girl children.

In his message on National Girl Child Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that India is proud of the accomplishments of its girls across all fields. He added that his government is equally resolute in ensuring no discrimination happens against the girl child.

In a post on X, he said, "Today, on National Girl Child Day, we reiterate our commitment to keep empowering the girl child and ensure a wide range of opportunities for her. India is proud of the accomplishments of the girl child across all fields."

Their feats continue to inspire us all, the prime minister added. Modi said his government has focused on sectors like education, technology, skills and healthcare among others which have contributed to empowering the girl child.
