Ooty’s first multi-speciality medical college, officially known as the Government Medical College, The Nilgiris, will be inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on April 6. The 40-acre hospital in Indu Nagar will have 21 departments and first-of-its-kind patient facilities. For example, following a demand from the tribal representatives, a special ward with 50 beds would be opened in the medical college for the tribal communities. Ten beds would be reserved for men and ten for women, while the remaining ten would be allotted for post-delivery care. The minister stated that it was the first time that a hospital ward had been opened, specially for the tribal people.
As per reports, the hospital will also provide tailored counselling services to the unique needs of tribal people, considering both their socio-cultural and medical needs. The hospital has 700 beds and was constructed on a budget of Rs 149.23 crore. In 2023, the institution was virtually inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi alongside 11 other medical colleges in the state after admitting its first batch of students. However, the hospital wasn’t still fully operational. The people of Ooty can now rely on the medical college instead of rushing patients to Coimbatore, Mysore and Bathery, said Tamil Nadu health minister Ma Subramaniyan.
