In recent years, there has been an alarming increase in the number of deaths among youngsters due to heart-related illnesses. Heart attacks have claimed the lives of many youths while exercising in the gym or attending a class. Noted cardiologists and medical professionals attended the ‘Heart Health in Youngsters’ session organised as part of Hridayapoorvam, a cardiac health initiative by Malayala Manorama. The session was led by Dr Ajith Mullassery, the chairman of the Madras Medical Mission Hospital and the head of the department, adult cardiology director Dr VM Kurien and head of the paediatric cardiology department, Dr Vijith Koshy Cherian.
How to eat mindfully
Most people bring changes in their lifestyle only after they have been diagnosed with a health condition. Dr VM Kurien said he often sees some of his close friends struggling as they had to give up their favourite food item. However, they might give in to their cravings and eat those food items to their heart’s content whenever possible. The doctor says no need to give up a favourite food item to avoid cholesterol. However, he advises mindful eating and limiting portions. It is a misconception that heart attacks are caused by cholesterol. Dr VM Kurien noted that cholesterol is an essential body component, which could cause trouble only if it exceeds the limit.
Check-up before fitness routines
Compared to other countries, Indians are genetically prone to heart-related diseases. So, doctors recommend doing a medical checkup before starting workouts. Besides, those above 30 should do a detailed heart checkup at proper intervals. Ensuring a healthy work-life balance is essential to relax your body and mind. Do not say ‘no’ if you can walk for at least half kilometres daily. Dr Vijith Koshy stated that enjoying a nice walk with your friends could also be considered exercise.
How to sleep and work right
Lack of sleep could affect your heart health. Even if you cannot catch eight hours of uninterrupted sleep, the body will be rejuvenated if you get a good sleep for at least four hours. Besides, taking a short nap of half an hour daily is great for reducing anxiety and controlling the blood sugar level. You should hit the bed only at least two hours after dinner. Meanwhile, Dr Ajith Mullassery advises youngsters who sit and work for long hours to take short walks at regular intervals.
30 – 40 minutes of moderate exercise daily is enough to lead a healthy life. Some people believe that consuming alcohol is good for the heart. However, the doctors do not recommend such things. In fact, Dr. Kurien warns against overconsumption of alcohol that could destroy health. He also added that obesity could lead to heart illnesses, and quick weight gain could affect the quality of heart health.
