The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is the talk of the town, as five cases were confirmed in India on Monday. Two cases each in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and one each in Gujarat and Rajasthan are the currently reported cases. Even when the Indian health ministry has said there is no unusual surge in the illness, Bengaluru schools have come up with instructions asking parents not to send kids if they even have a mild fever, cold or cough. Other state governments like Kerala, Telangana and Maharashtra have also developed their advisories. In Uttar Pradesh, the health department is taking extra care while preparing for the Maha Kumbh Mela, scheduled between January 13 and February 16. Meanwhile, it's important to know the symptoms of the disease and how you can take care of yourself if you suspect you are infected:

Do you need antibiotics to treat HMPV?
As HMPV is a virus, antibiotics won't help get rid of it. However, if your doctor prescribes antibiotics, it can be for any kind of secondary bacterial infection you get while suffering from HMPV. You can also take care of yourself by drinking a lot of fluids and taking over-the-counter medicines for any pains, coughs or other discomforts, as advised by your doctor. If your symptoms don't improve in a few days, do not hesitate to consult a healthcare provider.
