Are you thinking of novel ways to celebrate this year's Independence Day? What about freeing yourself from unhealthy habits that are ruling and spoiling the quality of your life and embracing a 'tryst with destiny' moment with improved ways of living? The Japanese Ikigai style of living is often quoted as a healthy example to follow for wholesome living. Try incorporating these six Japanese habits into your life, from August 15.
1) Healthy food in moderation
A balanced diet, prepared with seasonal ingredients and consumed in moderation, is the key to Japanese health. Try to eat small portions of seafood, rice, vegetables, and fermented foods, while savouring them.
2) Walk every day
Walking is an exercise that strengthens the heart, burns calories, and improves mental well-being. Start by walking for at least half an hour each day. Incorporate walking into your daily routine whenever possible. Take the stairs instead of the elevator when you visit any office, and go for a short walk after meals. These habits can significantly improve your health.

3) Practice Ikigai
Ikigai is the Japanese concept of finding meaning and happiness in life. Discovering Ikigai can lead to longevity, mental health, and happiness. To practise Ikigai, identify the activities that bring you joy, satisfaction, and purpose. Keep some time aside each day for these pursuits.
4) Make green tea a habit
Drinking green tea regularly is excellent for health. Green tea is rich in antioxidants that can ward off diseases and boost metabolism. Replace sugary drinks with green tea, and aim to drink it two or three times a day.
5) Yoga and stretching exercises
Incorporate daily stretching exercises, such as yoga, to give your body a chance to stretch. This practice will increase the body’s flexibility, reduce stress, and improve overall health. Along with this, include 15-20 minutes of daily breathing exercises.
6)  Simple living
Embrace minimalist living by finding joy in small spaces and contentment in simple things. Focus on one task at a time rather than multitasking. Do not clutter your home with unnecessary things but keep only what you need. These practices will bring happiness to your mind and create the foundation for a long and healthy life.
