Subin and Shalu wished for a dream abode in their hometown, Ettumanoor, in Kottayam, Kerala. They built the house beautifully merging the classic elements of traditional architecture with sleek contemporary features. The couple had read how architect Anupa had given a modern makeover to her ancestral home that was around a decade old.
The construction began only after levelling the uneven plot that lay on multiple levels. The structure, meanwhile, faces the east side. The couple insisted on designing the house based on the rules of the Vastusastra. The car porch has been built away to retain the traditional look of the structure. The multi-level sloped roof paved with traditional clay roofing tiles is the highlight of the elevation. The veranda has a truss roof while the rest of the house has a concrete ceiling beneath the truss roof. The family’s relatives live close to the house, so, the house has been conceived to allow easy communication with them.
Designed in 2750 sqft, the house has a car porch, sit-out, veranda, formal living area, dining space, central courtyard, kitchen with a work area and three bedrooms. The windows, doors and furniture are done in wood to complement the traditional look of the house.
The ‘L’ shaped sit-out with a spacious veranda is the family’s favourite spot. As it is a single-storey house, the interiors are arranged in the open theme. The spaces look interconnected while ensuring sufficient privacy. The beautiful greenery around the house could be enjoyed through the classic bay window in the formal living area.
There are lots of openings in the house that lets in natural light and breeze while pushing out the hot air. Meanwhile, the three courtyards ensure that the interiors are cool and pleasant even at noon.
The dining area with a double-height ceiling is an attractive feature in the interiors. The double-height wall here is decorated with jali works which also assures amazing ventilation inside the house.
The central courtyard near the dining area is a quaint spot of greenery that exudes positive vibes. The automated roof of the courtyard makes sure that the sparkling sun rays and the rain showers enter the house just as the family wishes. Meanwhile, the wash area is arranged separately.
The couple is delighted that their brand-new house looks exactly as they had imagined. Moreover, they feel proud when their relatives and friends vouch for the tranquil vibes here.
