Shilpa James and her family are thrilled to share their experience of building a beautiful house by overcoming the spatial challenges posed by a 6.5 cents plot in Changanassery. The family had been living for years in a small, old house that stood on this plot. Though they had decided to renovate the old house that was showing signs of decay, they changed their decision after meeting architect Shinto. The family agreed to the designer’s opinion that it is better to build a brand new house instead of renovating the old house. However, the rectangular plot was indeed a challenge as it had a width of just 8 meters. Besides, a road too runs through one of the sides. So, they were legally required to reserve a space of 3 meters here. Designer Shinto was all game to take up the challenge and promised to design a stunning house that suits the unique structure of the plot.
"Our relatives and friends often mocked us seeing the exteriors of this house. They asked us whether this was a lodge or a shopping centre. We ignored it as we were sure that our completed house would be the answer for all of it. We celebrated the house warming ceremony in December last year. Those who saw the interiors were wondering how we could build this house that is just 4.5 meters wide. Our entire house is only as wide as the master bedroom of a luxury house," says Shilpa.
The house is designed in the contemporary – minimalistic style, by meticulously planning and arranging the spaces. Over – the – top designs or decorations cannot be seen anywhere in the house. Two grove designs highlight the boxes on the exterior walls. Vertical pergolas are installed on its corners using GI tubes. The rest of the spaces don plain designs. The outer walls don the serene charm of the white hue. Lots of air vents and windows are installed to make sure that there is excellent ventilation.
A sit-out, formal and family living area, dining space, kitchen with an adjacent work area, four bedrooms, upper living area, balcony and an open terrace are arranged in this house designed in 2300 sq ft. The elegance of minimalism could be seen in the interiors. The interior spaces are designed in the open style without any unnecessary partitions.
The spaces aren’t over-crowded with furniture or other décor features. The custom-made furniture complements the general theme of the house. This makes the interiors look vaster and spacious. Meanwhile, wall in the formal living area is highlighted using texture.
The spacious dining hall is the focal point of the house. Here, a wall is highlighted with wooden panelling and has been converted into the prayer space. The dining table that can comfortably accommodate up to six guests is arranged just beside the stairway. The stairway that features a simple and compact design doesn't take up too much space.
The kitchen cupboards are made in multi wood and laminate finish. Granite is paved on the counter top.
The bath attached bedrooms have in – built wardrobes for storage and separate dressing spaces as well.
The house doesn't look like it has been built on such a small plot. This house is a perfect example of a beautiful abode with all the required facilities that is built with excellent planning and smart designs on a tiny plot.
