Don Bosco and his wife Lara hailing from Kochi share their experience of building an elegant house, overcoming the spatial challenges, on a 5.5 cents plot at Vaduthala in Kochi, Kerala. It was after doing considerable amount of homework that the couple actually began the construction of their dream dwelling. They wanted a comfortable house with all the necessary facilities.
They were particular that there should be abundant supply of natural light and fresh air in the interiors. From the initial planning to the housewarming ceremony, Don Bosco and his wife had lent their special touches to everything. Don Bosco says that they used to regularly follow the home style feature in Manorama Online. They are happy that the pictures and articles that appeared in the segment had inspired them while planning and designing their own house. It took around a year for them to prepare the plan and the design of the house.
The house designed in the contemporary architecture style highlights the theme of minimalism. This beautiful house in 2400 sq ft has formal and family living areas, dining space, kitchen and four bedrooms. Cladding tiles are used on the exterior walls and the interiors as well, to highlight the walls and spaces.
Unnecessary interior walls are avoided to make the spaces more open and spacious. The windows that line the walls bring in lots of pleasant sunshine. The skylights on the ceiling too help illuminate the interiors with natural light. The windows are done in UPVC with white paint finish to suit the theme of interiors.
A classy combination of white and wooden theme is followed in the interiors. Cement tiles in 40 cm X 40 cm are paved on the floor. The ceiling in the dining area and the upper living space are left with the cement finish without painting it. It lends a rustic charm to these spaces.
The kitchen too is designed in the white and wooden theme. Nano white is paved on the counter top. The kitchen and the adjacent store room were separated at the beginning. However, the owners turned it into open style and now the kitchen looks vast and spacious.
Unique color themes make the bedrooms stand out. Space utility and storage have been given prime importance here. In–built storage spaces are arranged beneath the cots.
The small front yard is beautified with elegant landscaping and flower gardens. Don Bosco and Lara vow that an amazing house could be easily built on a small plot with proper planning and wise utilization of spaces.
