Unbelievable makeover: What a facelift for this Mavelikkara house

Dr. Prashant, a native of Cherukole in Mavelikkara, Kerala, is proud of his house which got a recent makeover, with more modern facilities. The old house which was more than 20 years old had space constraints. Besides, there wasn’t adequate supply of fresh air and natural light in the interiors. The family decided to renovate their house as they wanted to transform it into a chic and modern abode.

Truss works were done in layers by retaining the sloped roof. The roof paved with concrete tiles gives the house a unique and contemporary look. White and grey shades adorn the exterior walls. Cladding tiles enhance the stylish look of the house.

There are living and dining areas, kitchen and work area, 5 bedrooms, upper living space and home theater in this elegant home which has an area of 4000 sq ft. The space constraints of the old structure were resolved by redesigning the interiors.

Many walls in the interiors which separated spaces were demolished to make it more open, vast and spacious. The hall, which consists of the dining area and the stair way, is redone in double height. These new features make the interior look vast.

These are the changes that were made in the house:

» The front courtyard is made spacious by demolishing the facade of the old house.

» The car porch is shifted from the right side to the left.

» Mosaic flooring is replaced with vitrified tiles.

» The bedrooms are made spacious with attached bathrooms and built-in wardrobes.

» The old kitchen is transformed into a modern modular kitchen.

The glass ceiling on the roof not only adds to the overall look of the house but also illuminates the interiors with natural light. More windows are added to ensure excellent cross-ventilation. The strip ceiling, done in the interiors, using teak planks is an eye catching feature. The cove lighting done in between these planks makes the interiors look pleasant always.

The old concrete stairway which took up lots of space was completely demolished. The new stairway made in the MS and teak combination adds a regal charm to the interiors. Toughened glass is installed on the hand railings. There is a living area at the upper landing, with a modern home theater adjacent to it.

Renewed landscaping too plays a major role in giving this house a mesmerizing look. The courtyard is paved with interlocked bricks. Beautiful green meadows and a charming garden complete the front courtyard. Now, this elegant house stands out in Cherukole for its spectacular makeover.
