For Malayalis, wherever they are in the world, Onam means celebrating nostalgia. On Thiruvonam, the most auspicious day of the festival season they embrace the Malayali identity to the fullest. Meanwhile, Kerala's traditional costume, which endows the state's unique culture, plays a significant role in this celebration.

While the mode of celebrations has undergone some changes, traditional Kerala attire remains indispensable for Onam. It's impossible to imagine Onam without Kasavu (golden border) clothing. However, these garments have also undergone modern interpretations. This year, Onam fashion is all about blending tradition and modernity.

Prints featuring plants, flowers, Onam delicacies, nostalgic objects, and even faces are appearing on Kasavu outfits. Besides the traditional settu mundu (two-piece saree) and settu sari, western outfits are also making their presence felt in the market.

Screen and block prints are trending in Onam fashion. From banana leaves and banana chips to Onam decorations like 'Onapookkalam' (floral designs) and 'Olappeepi' (palm leaf toys) - these motifs are finding their way onto outfits. Designers are prioritizing versatility, ensuring that the outfits can be worn even after Onam. Off-white garments with pink, yellow, and indigo prints are in high demand.

Saris with Bandhani designs, digital prints, and even those inspired by mural paintings are capturing the attention. Contrast blouses are the preferred choice for most women. Blouses with intricate work like Ajrakh, mirror-work, polka dots, brocade, and Kalamkari are popular picks.

Kasavu churidars are also in high demand. Western-style casual outfits with embroidery and Kasavu detailing on an off-white base are creating a buzz in the market.
