Kochi: The Kalyan Jewellers M4Marry Wedding Week 2018 came to a close, not with a fade to black, but with a blinding beam of lights. The concluding show showcased a rather crisp variant of the first two collections by Anju Modi and Tarun Tahiliani respectively.

If Gaurav Gupta’s flary designs were not dazzling enough, the entire runway was dotted with starry lights using Edison bulbs on a black backdrop. Gaurav stuck to his typical style of eccentric drapes and silhouettes for his bridal collection which was predominated by gowns rather than traditional lehengas.

The exhibit set off with anchor introducing the couture king and his style of work. Then followed the models draped in multi-layered gowns of peachy hues. The colour pallete used in the first round was very metallic pastel and the fabrics were embellished chiffon and satin. The second round was a classy maroon affair which then transitioned to a deep shade of sea blue. All the while, the men were dressed in black and blue tuxedos with minimal embroidery details on their blazers.

The closing sequence added a pinch of drama to the show with four models dressed in cherry-red fish-cut gowns walking simultaneously on the dimly lit stage.

An audience of almost 1,000 people was spellbound by the inky designs gliding effortlessly.

What makes this fashion week stand out is that it ditched the standard ramp and made the show more intimate with barely a 15-cm deep stage. Stage was not the only atypical feature of south India’s largest fashion week. All three participating designers lived up to their image of experimentalists who make all their collections unique.
