Here’s why movie buffs shouldn’t miss Ken Loach’s films this IFFK Ken Loach

The 21st edition of International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) will showcase nine films of Kenneth Charles Loach, popularly known as Ken Loach, in its Retro package. Known for his socially critical narratives, Loach’s exemplary treatment of subjects such as poverty, labor rights and homelessness has made him an all-time favorite among movie buffs.

At this year’s IFFK, delegates will be treated to the award-winning director’s celebrated films such as Fatherland, Hidden Agenda, I, Daniel Blake, Looking for Eric, Kes, Land and Freedom, The Angel’s Share, Looks and Smiles, and Riff-Raff.

His recently released film I, Daniel Blake was much talked about and received numerous awards, including the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. His 1969 drama film Kes is among the must watch movies in this edition’s IFFK. The movie was selected as the seventh greatest British film of the 20th century.

Some of his movies were kept in abeyance for political reasons as his works show no allegiance to the prevailing systems. His movies are for the working class people and they showcase Loach’s anger towards the system of classifying people based on their professional statuses. He has often been criticized for restricting himself to such films.

However, Loach is unperturbed by such criticisms and makes sure that issues concerning the commoners were discussed in his movies. Apparently, for the same reason, Loach has uploaded a number of his works on YouTube for free.

Loach’s movies are sure to create a connection with the people of Kerala as there are a lot of working class people in the state.
