Try the pretty simple recipe of killipotta sambar that could be made using ingredients that are easily available in your pantry.

Ingredients
¼ cup toor dal
¼ cup masoor dal
½ tsp + ½ tsp turmeric powder
¼ tsp red chilli powder
¼ tsp coriander powder
¼ tsp asafoetida powder
2 medium-sized shallots
1 big tomato
Gooseberry sized ball of tamarind
4 big or 8 small garlic cloves
3 green chillies
4 red chillies
4 cups water
Salt as required
2 tbsp sesame oil
Mustard seeds

Preparation
Cook the toor dal and masoor dal in 1 cup water by adding ½ tsp turmeric powder and salt
Soak the tamarind in 1 cup water
Heat oil and splutter mustard seeds
Add the red and green chillies
Sauté until the red chillies turn darker in colour
Now add sliced shallots and garlic
Sauté until the shallots turn transparent
Into it add asafoetida
Add turmeric powder, chilli powder and coriander powder
Sauté until the raw smell of the powders is gone
Now add tomato and cook until it turns nice and mushy
Pour in the tamarind water
Cook well
Add the cooked dal and 1 cup hot water
Give everything a good mix
Allow the gravy to boil
Finally, garnish with chopped coriander leaves
Killipotta sambar tastes best with dosa and idli.
