"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet" , so does an apple. But not every apple would be sweet. This spongy and sour rose apple bears no much relations with red apples, and also isn't as sweet as the latter. Yet this sour pink fruit is undeniably a summer favourite. It is usually consumed as such or snacked on with salt and chilli powder. In some parts of Kerala, it is used to make salads and stir fries.
Chambakka neeru, aka juice made of rose apples is a lesser known recipe made of these tiny backyard fruits.
Being rich in fibre, they ease digestion. The presence of jambosine in them would also help regulate diabetes.
