This six-decade-old eatery along the Mavelikkara-Kozhencherry road in Kerala's Alappuzha district looks nothing special from the outside. But if you wait a while, you can see just how special this quaint little eatery is for snack lovers.

An old-looking glass display cupboard at the Plavelil Hotel at Madathumpady Junction near Perissery gets filled to the brim by freshly made parippuvadas and unniyappams every now and then. But to no avail as the stock gets over as soon as they are piled up. The cupboard gets empty in lightening speed as everyone rushes to grab a snack with a glass of hot tea.

It was in the 1960’s that brothers Plavelil Velayudha Pillai, Sreedharan Pillai, Narayana Pillai and Parameshwaran Pillai started this hotel. Even though they are no more, their children have been running the hotel, keeping up the family tradition. Locals vouch that the mouthwatering flavours of these snacks has remained the same for the last six decades.

In 2000, Sreedharan’s son P S Manoharan quit his job in Sharjah to take up the mantle.
