Fish is almost an indispensable part of any food lover's daily meal. While consumption of other meat like chicken etc are known to result in lifestyle diseases, many of the local fish types have medicinal value besides them being nutritious and tasty.
India with a long coastline has a large variety of fishes and a large variety of fish dishes. Here are a few must-try fish items from different states in India.
West Bengal
In West Bengal, one of the most popular fish dish is 'machher jhol.' It is cooked with ginger, garlic, turmeric, mustard and small onion. A different variant of machher jhol is prepared with fish pieces soaked in curd or butter.
Odisha
A traditional fish preparation of Odisha is 'macha besara.' The fish is first dipped in a paste of mustard, ginger, and garlic before frying. The pieces are then boiled into a curry with turmeric as the main condiment.
Nagaland
The meat of fish in a medium-masala mix is stuffed into bamboo poles and cooked over fire in Nagaland. This goes well with chilli sauce.
Assam
'Masor tenga' is a medium-masala Assamese dish with catla fish (South Asian Carp) cooked in mustard oil with turmeric and fish masala.
Manipur
'Nga atoiba thongba' is an authentic Manipuri fish dish cooked with onion, onion shoots, cumin seeds, red chilli, and potatoes.
Kashmir
The traditional Kashmiri fish delicacy is prepared with ghee and lotus stem. This goes extremely well with roti.
Telangana
'Shahi fish korma,' rich in traditional masala ingredients, is a speciality in Hyderabad. Pieces of fried fish is mixed with the gravy in this. 'Bommidala fish pulusu' from Andhra Pradesh can entice anyone with its aroma.
Goa
Goa specializes in fish curry varieties mostly with seer Fish and mackerel. Coconut, turmeric, garlic and red chilli are the main ingredients.
From the Maharashtran coast all the way to Kanyakumari, sardines are the most sought-after fish type.
