Bava Gayakan P Jayachandran, whose soulful voice has mesmerised generations of music lovers across South India, has crooned over 16,000 songs in a career spanning five decades. Though he turned 80 this year, the late singer had been part of some of the latest musical hits in Malayalam, composed by a new crop of musical composers, including M Jayachandran and Gopi Sundar. We take a look at some of the Malayalam songs that left a mark among the younger audience.

Podimeesha from the movie 'Pa Va'
Remember the hit song Podimeesha from the Anoop Menon, Murali Gopi-starrer ‘Pa Va’, which hit theatres in 2016? The quirky, love song was composed by actor-musician Anand Madhusoodanan and was crooned by P Jayachandran who perfectly captured the essence of teenage love, with his youthful voice and energy in the song featuring a crop of young actors.

Sharadhambaram
Those who watched ‘Ennu Ninte Moideen,’ can never forget the satirical, yet soulful rendition Sharadambaram by M Jayachandran and Ramesh Narayanan. The duet was sung by veteran singer P Jayachandran with Shilpa Raj who made her Mollywood singing debut with this song. ‘Sharadambaram’ was a spoof musical created by Moideen (Prithviraj) in the movie, as he tries to declare his love for Kanchanamala (Parvathy Thiruvothu), amidst opposition from her brother. The song is still fresh in the minds of the Malayali audience.

Peyneer Pole
This soulful melody composed by M Jayachandran with lyrics by Rafeeq Ahammed is part of Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty’s directorial debut ‘Otta’. The song sung by P Jayachandran perfectly captures the mood of the film, which follows the tragic journey of three men, who flee their abusive past in search of freedom, only to face insurmountable challenges and countless obstacles.

This song from the film ‘Jilebi’ directed by Arun Sekhar and featuring Jayasurya in the lead was among P Jayachandran’s musical hits in 2015. The song’s beautiful visualisation of Kerala and its paddy fields and greenery was elevated by Jayachandran’s nostalgic rendition, which celebrated Malayali’s love for his homeland and the soil he was born in.

Illathalam Kaimarumbol
Though the movie ‘God For Sale’ featuring Kunchacko Boban was not a hit, the song ‘Illathalam Kaimarumbo’ continues to be a favourite among the audience. Illathalam Kaimarumbol is a romantic number composed by Afzal Yusuff with soulful lyrics by Rafeeque Ahammed.
