The singer recalls how her then-husband would discourage her constantly. "He would always point out my faults and be very critical about me and my songs. He also put a lot of conditions in my career as a singer," the singer told Gauthami. She added that she only had time for tears as the man she married was a sadist.

She also states that Anoop separated her from her family, especially her parents who had always been the singer's lifeline.

"I couldn't bear any of that. I am someone who gave a lot of priority to songs. I didn't want to lead a life deprived of singing and happiness," she added.

Vijayalakshmi says it was her decision to go ahead with the divorce. "When you have a toothache, you try to bear the pain. But, if the pain gets worse, you have no choice but to remove it," said the singer.
