Evergreen Malayalam carol ‘Kaaval Maalagamare Kannadakaruthe’ is one of the most played songs during the Christmas season. The sweet voice of Sujatha makes it a delightful experience, compelling us to play the song on loop to fill the air with Christmas vibes. Sujatha had sung this iconic carol song for the album ‘ Snehapratheekam’ composed by AJ Joseph.
Christmas at home
Sujatha says that she started celebrating Christmas at home after the birth of her daughter Shweta. Now, Sujatha and her husband Mohan are thrilled to celebrate the joy of Christmas with their darling granddaughter. “The Christmas season and the carol songs always grant a unique festive mood. ‘Kaaval Maalagamare’ is the most special one among my carol songs and my favourite too. I can see the face of infant Jesus every time I sing that song. I also like the songs ‘Ponnu Myrrah Kunthikkam’ and ‘Alakadalum Kulirilayum’. I mostly sing ‘Alakadalum Kulirilayum’ on the stage as it has a unique vibe,” says Sujatah.
Mother and child
Sujatha often visits churches to offer prayers. Her heart fills with joy when she sees the idol of Mother Mary and Infant Jesus on her lap. “Our wishes would be promptly fulfilled if we say it to our mothers. Similarly, Infant Jesus too understands the prayers and desires of his mothers. When I spend a few moments silently with them, it feels as if they are speaking to me. Mother Mary and Infant Jesus understand our prayers even if we don’t tell it to them. I always carry a few pictures in my bag; Infant Jesus’ picture is one of them,” notes the singer.
Sujatha recalls an incident from years ago, when she realised the incredible grace of Mother Mary. Legendary singer Yesudas used to sing every year at the Velankanni church during the annual festival. Once, Sujatha too accompanied Yesudas to Velankanni to sing at the concert. She was just 12 years old then. “On the day of the concert, Dasettan had some discomfort in his throat. The program was about to begin. But, he couldn’t sing as the voice didn’t come out of his throat. We had to sing Tamil and Malayalam Christian devotional songs. We were the only singers besides the orchestra. I was a little girl then and knew only a few songs. Everyone was so tensed. But, Yesudas prayed and then started singing on the stage. I was surprised. His amazing voice was flowing effortlessly without any difficulty. That was an incident when I experienced the impeccable love and grace of Mother Mary,” says Sujatha.
Song for Mother
Sujatha and Shweta are busy working for a musical album, their dream project, dedicated to Mother Mary. They plan to release the songs that are produced under the banner of Chennai-based Marian Digital studio, after the Christmas season. “It was Antony, who had worked as the keyboardist of G Devarajan who told us about this project. We were interested as soon as we heard about it. This album is unique and would be different from the other songs that are released in honour of Mother Mary. Moreover, Shweta and I are extremely delighted to work in this project as we are mothers too,” Sujatha signs off.
