Appani Sharath is on a roll. The actor who was last seen in Joshiy’s ‘Antony’, is set to play the lead in the upcoming OTT series ‘Pan Indian Sundari’, which marks Sunny Leone’s debut in Mollywood. Onmanorama caught up with the actor regarding his latest films and how much has changed for him since his Mollywood debut as 'Appani Ravi' in ‘Angamaly Diaries’.
You were last seen in ‘Antony’ alongside Joju George and Kalyani Priyadarshan…
I enjoyed ‘Porinju Mariam Jose’ and wanted to be part of a film helmed by Joshiy sir. So, I was excited about bagging the role in 'Antony'. It is a movie, which addresses a serious issue and I played my role with equal earnestness and sincerity. That is how I approach all my films and ‘Antony’ was no exception. Also, everyone on the sets was supportive. I am also glad with the response the movie received at the theatres. I hope I will continue to bag bigger roles after this.
Your next project features Sunny Leone in a prominent role…
Yes, we have already started shooting for ‘Pan Indian Sundari’, a comedy-action series that will stream on the HR OTT platform. Sunny Leone is making her debut in the series, and she plays a prominent role. We had a lot of combination scenes together and I was humbled by the respect and professionalism she showed her co-actors on the sets.
Can you tell us a little more about the project?
Satheesh who has worked in several media houses is helming the big-budget series. 'Pan Indian Sundari' features three songs, which is a first for a series. The makers are attempting to break the mould and bring a new perspective to a web series.
Ever since Angamaly Diaries, what has changed for you?
Over the years, I have been allowed to play the lead in several movies. Some of these movies and characters worked. Some didn't. As someone who received a lot of appreciation for my initial body of work, including 'Angamaly Diaries' and ‘Velipadinte Pusthakam’, I strongly believe people accept good films and good characters. Not all of your characters or movies work all the time and that is ok. I have received both praise and criticism for my work. What matters is the focus and dedication you put into your job. I am the happiest when people receive my film at the theatres. I got that feeling with 'Antony' and that makes me happy.
As an actor, what are the key points you keep in mind?
I believe, as an actor, everyone has to stay healthy and fit. An actor’s most important tool is his body. I'm not talking about size or shape. It's about exuding energy. Actors like Oduvil Unnikrishnan retained their vibe and energy throughout their careers. Also, I am someone who does a lot of research for my characters. I believe in-depth discussions at the film sets work well for actors.
