Kangana Ranaut’s much-anticipated directorial venture, 'Emergency', has finally made its way to theatres after numerous delays. The film, which delves into a critical chapter of India’s history, opened to Rs 2.35 crore on its first day—a career-best for Kangana in the past five years.
While the opening figures may appear modest, Emergency has surpassed the debut collections of her recent films. For instance, Tejas (2023), an aerial action drama, brought in Rs 1.25 crore on its first day. Similarly, the 2022 action film 'Dhaakad' managed Rs 1.20 crore. Even her 2021 political biopic 'Thalaivii', which explored the life of J Jayalalithaa, recorded Rs 1.46 crore across Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi versions on its opening day. 'Emergency' has been making waves online ever since its release on January 17th, consistently trending on Google and drawing attention for its gripping storyline and Kangana Ranaut's direction.
Set during India’s Emergency period (1975-1977), the film revisits a controversial time when civil liberties were curtailed, and press freedom was heavily restricted. Kangana not only directed the film but also stars in it alongside an ensemble cast, including Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman, Anupam Kher, Mahim Chaudhary, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik. The screenplay is crafted by Ritesh Shah.
