1. Ayyappantamma Neyyappam Chuttu

This children's movie, directed by Mathew Paul, remains a childhood favourite for many millennials. It tells the story of two siblings, Rohan and Meera, who befriend an orphaned boy, Monappan, who influences their lives and helps reunite their separated parents. While we may have been too young to grasp the full depth of the narrative, the song "Patti Kadikkalle Veetukatre" was etched in all our hearts.

2. Devadoothan

This fantasy thriller, helmed by Sibi Malayil and starring Mohanlal, wasn’t a commercial success upon release but gained cult status over time. Its 2024 re-release was a massive hit, breaking records. With a haunting storyline, memorable soundtrack, and iconic characters like Aleena, Nikhil Maheshwar, and Vishal Krishnamurthy, Devadoothan remains unforgettable.

3. Priyam

A delightful rom-com directed by Sanal, Priyam starred Kunchacko Boban and Deepa Nair. While it captured hearts with its love story, it was equally loved by children for the antics of Anu, Tinu, and Vinu. The song "Minnaaminni Ithiri Ponne" became a go-to performance piece at family gatherings. With its mix of comedy, relationships, and a touch of Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke vibes, this film had something for everyone.

4. Thenkasipattanam

This Rafi-Mecartin comedy-drama was the laughter fest of 2000. Featuring the hilarious duo of Kannan and Dasan, Thenkasipattanam gave us OG bromance and plenty of chaos. The KD & Co. brand of mischief ruled the theatres for 275 days. With Suresh Peters' foot-tapping soundtrack—"Kadamizhiyil Kamaladalam" is still a crowd-puller—it’s a timeless favourite.

5. Narasimham

Shaji Kailas’ mass-action blockbuster starring Mohanlal as Poovalli Induchoodan shattered box office records and gave us unforgettable dialogues like "Nee Po Mone Dineshaaa." A trendsetter of its time, Narasimham remains a cult classic despite some of its controversial themes. It held the record for the highest-grossing Malayalam film of its era and ran in theatres for over 200 days.

6. Valliettan

Directed by Shaji Kailas, Valliettan was Mammootty’s answer to Narasimham. The movie recently enjoyed a 4K Dolby Atmos re-release, and the song "Manathe Manithumba Mottil" went viral on Instagram reels. While its patriarchal undertones are debated today, Valliettan has a loyal fan base that celebrates its grandeur and Mammootty’s towering presence.

7. Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal

A family drama by Sathyan Anthikad, Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal starred Jayaram and Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, introducing a young Kalidas Jayaram to the audience. The real-life father-son duo’s on-screen magic captured hearts. Moments like Kalidas’ playful exchanges with Innocent remain a joy to watch. The dance battle between Bhanupriya and Lakshmi on the Ghanashyama Vrindaranyam track is Malayali's Dola Re Dola moment on screen.   

8. Oru Cheru Punchiri

M.T. Vasudevan Nair’s Oru Cheru Punchiri is a poetic exploration of growing old gracefully. Featuring Oduvil Unnikrishnan and Nirmala Sreenivasan, this tale of an elderly couple cherishing life’s simple pleasures went unnoticed by many younger viewers in 2000. 10. Mazha

Written and directed by Lenin Rajendran, Mazha is a poetic adaptation of Madhavikkutty’s Nashtappetta Neelambari.
