Though Mollywood registered huge losses last year, a new Ormax report has revealed that Malayalam cinema had doubled its box office share in 2024. As per the report, Mollywood's box office share increased from five per cent in 2023 to 10 per cent in 2024, surpassing the Rs 1,000 crore mark for the first time.

Though 26 movies brought in good revenue for Malayalam cinema in 2024, including five films that crossed the Rs 100 crore mark, the Kerala Film Producers Association (KFPA) had recently released a report stating that the industry faced Rs 650 to Rs 700 crore losses last year. The industry, as per the KFPA report, had spent Rs 1,000 crore for the production of 199 new films and five re-releases.
Gujarati cinema, meanwhile, also recorded an impressive growth of 66 per cent in 2024, but was next only to Malayalam cinema in terms of box office collections, the Ormax report revealed.

Hindi cinema, however, saw a decline with box office collections dropping from Rs 5,380 crore in 2023 to Rs 4,679 crore in 2024. Interestingly, a total of 31 per cent of the collections in Bollywood came from dubbed versions of South India films. However, collections from only-Hindi language films saw a 37 per cent decline, the report revealed.

Meanwhile, Allu Arjun-starrer 'Pushpa 2: The Rule' went on to become the highest grossing film of 2024, with a gross box office of Rs 1,403 crore. The Hindi-dubbed version collected Rs 889 crore setting a new record. 'Pushpa 2,' 'Kalki' and 'Stree 2' were the only the films that surpassed the Rs 500 crore mark in 2024, while 'Devaara', 'Bhool Buhlaiyaa 3' and 'Greatest of All Time' were films that collected over Rs 300 crore.
