Actress Nithya Menen has found herself at the centre of a social media storm following an incident during the audio launch of Jayam Ravi’s film 'Kadhalikka Neramillai'. The controversy began when an assistant extended his hand for a handshake as Nithya stepped onto the stage to speak. However, the actress reportedly declined, saying, “My health isn’t great, and what if I catch COVID or something?”
What followed added fuel to the fire. Moments later, actor Vinay Rai joined her on stage, and Nithya greeted him with a warm hug. This apparent contrast in behaviour sparked backlash online, with a video of the incident quickly going viral. Social media users accused the actress of being disrespectful and discriminatory, arguing that everyone, regardless of their status, deserves equal respect and dignity.
Adding to the controversy, another incident involving director Mysskin drew attention. When Mysskin approached Nithya, she reportedly joked that he shouldn’t attempt a hug. She then kissed him on the cheek, and Mysskin responded by kissing her hand. The actress was also seen warmly hugging her co-star Jayam Ravi, which some interpreted as a display of camaraderie reserved for her close circle.
However, critics have called out what they perceive as selective behaviour. Many have accused Nithya of showing partiality and questioned her apparent discomfort in interacting with certain individuals.
'Kadhalikka Neramillai', directed by Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi, wife of Udhayanidhi Stalin, features Nithya Menen and Jayam Ravi in lead roles. The film is set to hit theatres on January 14.
