The makers of ‘La Tomatina’ didn’t mind the soaring prices of tomatoes as they imported tonnes of tomatoes for the climax of the movie. The movie directed by T Arunkumar portrays the iconic Spanish festival, a first, in Malayalam cinema. The story and screenplay of ‘ La Tomatina’ is by Sajeevan Anthikad. The filming of the movie in which Joy Mathew plays the lead role has been wrapped up.

T Arunkumar calls ‘La Tomatina’ a political thriller. It narrates the story of a group of people who fights unknown powers that can even violate the privacy of individuals in a democratic state. The makers promise that the audience would be amazed by the thrilling sequences in the movie. The action sequence in the climax involves scenes where the lead actor is covered in tomatoes. This is for the first time that tomatoes have been used as the main property in a Malayalam movie. La Tomatina is an iconic festival of Spain that is celebrated lavishly. Meanwhile, the scenes in ‘La Tomatina’ resemble the vibrancy of these festivities.

The story revolves around five characters. Besides Joy Mathew, Kottayam Nazeer and Sreejith Ravi play pivotal roles. Sreejith Ravi says that his role is the most unique one in his career. Newcomer Maria Thomson, who is settled in London plays the female lead. Ramesh Rajasekharan too makes his debut in ‘La Tomatina’

Ten tonnes of tomatoes were specially imported from Mysuru for this film. Mysuru tomatoes are plump and juicy which made it perfect for the scenes. The movie is bankrolled by Sandhya M. The makers are trying to release it in the film festival circuit too, besides the theatrical release.
