Thrissur: Renowned Kathakali maestro Kalamandalam Gopi, known for his mesmerising performances as Bhima and Nalan, has announced his retirement from the stage. The decision to step away comes due to health reasons.
"My body is not cooperating anymore. My legs hurt, and I can't stand for long. I can no longer perform Kathakali as I used to, and I don't want to disappoint my audience. That is why I am stepping away from the stage," Gopi Asan said with sadness.
He had hinted at his retirement on January 11 during the release of his poetry collection 'Manoratham' in Thrissur. Last year, he performed only in Guruvayur and Kottakkal. However, he confirmed that he would not be participating in the upcoming festival at Vishwambhara Temple, Kottakkal, starting on the 25th of this month.

With a career spanning over 30 years, Gopi Asan has enthralled audiences in Kerala and abroad with his Kathakali performances. Although he portrayed various roles, it was his portrayal of heroic 'Pacha' roles that won him widespread acclaim.
Beyond Kathakali, Gopi Asan also made his presence felt in cinema. He appeared in films like 'Vanaprastham' (directed by Shaji N Karun), 'Shantham' (directed by Jayaraj), and 'Loudspeaker.' Adoor Gopalakrishnan even made a documentary about him, titled 'Kalamandalam Gopi.'
Kalamandalam Gopi was honored with the Padma Shri in recognition of his contributions to the world of Kathakali. He has also received numerous other accolades, including the Central Sangeetha Natak Akademi Award, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award, and Kerala Kalamandalam Award.
