Thiruvananthapuram: With the Vizhinjam international seaport welcoming its first cargo ship, numerous job opportunities will emerge in the state, primarily in specialized sectors. Applications for these port-related jobs should be submitted in response to announcements by the company operating the port.

Employment opportunities will be available for those with expertise in engineering, MBA holders, professionals with similar qualifications, and experts in finance and accounts.

Individuals with experience and a license to operate ITV (Inter-Terminal Vehicles) used for moving containers are in demand at all ports. Additional openings include experts in operating and repairing specialized equipment, plumbers, electricians, and drivers.

Furthermore, more jobs will be created through the establishment of training centres aimed at guiding candidates in securing various port-related vacancies. A training centre for port-related jobs has already been opened at Vizhinjam by ASAP under the Kerala government and the Adani Skill Development Centre.

The international seaport is being developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd, (APSEZ), India's largest port developer and part of the Adani Group, in a public-private partnership model at a cost of around Rs 8,867 crore.

Equipped with modern equipment and advanced automation and IT systems, Vizhinjam will become India's first semi-automated port, expected to be fully commissioned in September or October 2024.

Besides the positions directly related to the port, thousands of allied jobs will be created in and around Vizhinjam. With thousands of containers being transported from Vizhinjam, a similar number of container trucks will be needed, creating job opportunities for truck employees and technical experts. Additionally, employment opportunities will arise for workers in private yards where containers are stored and for caterers providing food for everyone arriving at the port.

Further job creation will occur through the arrangement of accommodation for port employees, the establishment of a seafood park and other industries, and the development of a new industrial corridor.
