Chalakudy: KSRTC will flag off its first air-conditioned Swift Superfast bus next week at Chalakudy. The corporation plans to launch more AC buses if this one succeeds. A unique hybrid AC system developed by Chalakkudy-based Heavy Cool company will be fitted into the bus. This air conditioning system uses four batteries connected to the alternator and has no direct links to the engine. So, the AC could be switched on without turning on the ignition. Besides, the energy expenditure won’t skyrocket even if the AC is switched on for longer hours.

It costs around Rs 6 lakh to get a bus fitted with this air conditioning system. The interiors of the bus would be completely insulated using plywood and mats. Meanwhile, the air ducts would be arranged to evenly distribute cool air throughout the bus. Besides, there would be AC vents on the ceiling for the passengers who stand. Heavy Cool company is adding modifications to the KSRTC bus after successfully installing the system in trucks. The company officials stated that the AC could be switched on for more than ten hours even when the vehicle's engine is off, allowing truck drivers to sleep and rest comfortably during long journeys.
