Chartered seaplane services connecting four Kerala airports, waterbodies: Private players express interest

Reports and studies on how seaplanes can disturb the fishing sector and wildlife have surfaced since the Kerala government did its seaplane test flight from Kochi to Munnar. However, it looks like none of it is bothering the state government. As per reports, efforts are on to launch chartered services linking the four Kerala airports and various waterbodies. Three private players, including De Havilland Canada, which operated Kerala's test seaplane, have expressed interest in launching chartered services. In addition to tourism-based requirements, the services are also expected to bank on organ transportation requirements, emergency purposes and VIP movements.
A govt service, first
A government-run chartered service is expected to be launched first, followed by private services. This is against the backdrop of various warnings and concerns raised by the forest department, fisherfolk, and other labour unions. After that, the proposal to launch the services from the waterbodies of Kumarakom, Kovalam, Idukki Dam, Mattupetty Dam, Ashtamudi Lake, Chandragiripuzha, and Banasura Sagar Dam is expected to be considered.
Mumbai - Navi Mumbai water taxi and seaplane service
The first phase of a water taxi and seaplane service will be launched between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai in March next year. This is expected to drastically reduce travel time on the routes and provide faster, eco-friendly alternatives for commuters between the destinations. A new jetty was recently constructed near the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which can be used for this purpose.
